The Australian football community is in mourning following the tragic passing of Heidelberg United footballer Keely Lockhart, just six months after the death of her twin brother.
The heartbreaking news was confirmed on Sunday when Heidelberg United FC released a lengthy and emotional statement on social media, describing Keely as a “club legend” who passed away in the early hours of the morning.
“It is with deep sadness that we honor the life of club legend Keely Lockhart, who passed in the early hours of the morning. The club is heartbroken by this loss,” the statement read.
At the time of publication, the cause of Keely’s sudden passing had not been made public.
Keely Lockhart was far more than just a footballer. She was a central figure at Heidelberg United, where she played as a formidable striker in the women’s team and served as a dedicated coach in the community girls’ program since joining the club in late 2019.
She recently marked a milestone, playing her 50th game for Heidelberg this year.
“Keely had a profound impact on all our lives, both on and off the field,” the club shared. “She was a mentor, a leader, and a friend to each of us… a true Heidelberg Warrior who put everything on the line week in and week out for her team.”
In addition to her role in the senior squad, Keely was often seen supporting the junior girls’ teams, cheering them on from the sidelines, offering encouragement, and checking in with players, parents, and fellow staff members alike.
Before joining Heidelberg, Keely was a standout player for Eltham in the State League 1 North-West competition, where she had already built a reputation for her passion, sportsmanship, and leadership.
Her impact was felt beyond her home club. Former team FC Bulleen Lions, where she played a key role in their 2014 Women’s Cup triumph, also released a tribute:
“Keely was a much-loved member of our club and the wider football community,” Bulleen Lions said. “Our thoughts are with her family, friends, former teammates and all those who knew her.”
News of her passing sent shockwaves throughout the Victorian football community.
Football reporter Joey Lynch called it:
“A heartbreaking day for Victorian football. Vale, Keely Lockhart.”
Fellow player and football voice Georgia Rajic also expressed her sorrow:
“What a sad, sad day. Vale Keely Lockhart. Thoughts and condolences to her family and the wider football community. Heartbroken.”
Keely’s death comes just six months after the tragic passing of her twin brother, compounding grief for her family and those close to her.
The club, fans, teammates, and friends are now mourning not just the loss of an athlete, but a mentor, a sister, and a role model, whose presence both on and off the pitch left a lasting impact.
