School of American Ballet Mourns the Sudden Passing of Alumnus Benjamin Lepson
The School of American Ballet (SAB) has announced with deep sorrow the sudden passing of one of its cherished alumni, Benjamin Lepson.
In a heartfelt statement shared on social media on Monday, the institution expressed its grief:
“All of us at SAB are heartbroken to learn of the passing of recent alumnus Benjamin Lepson.”
Ben began his journey with SAB in 2007, enrolling as a young student in the school’s very first Preparatory Division classes. Over the years, he blossomed into a gifted and dedicated artist, eventually taking on the lead male role in Balanchine’s Concerto Barocco during the prestigious 2019 Workshop Performances, a capstone moment in his training.
Following his time at SAB, Ben went on to dance professionally with the Miami City Ballet, where he continued to bring passion and artistry to the stage as a member of the corps de ballet.
Born and raised in New York City, Ben commuted daily from his family’s home in the Bronx—a testament to his dedication and love for the art form. While many of his peers lived on campus and bonded in the dorms, Ben’s commitment never wavered, and he remained an integral part of the SAB community.
Ben’s cause of death has not been made available at the time of filing this report.
In their tribute, SAB described Ben as someone who “touched the lives of so many in our community. He brought warmth, humor, and heart into every studio he entered, and his passion for ballet was evident in every class and rehearsal. He lit up the School with his dancing, his smile, and his infectious spirit.”
As tributes continue to pour in across social media, the School of American Ballet, the ballet world, and countless friends and admirers mourn the loss of a remarkable young artist, whose light burned brightly both on and off the stage.
The SAB and the entire dance community extend their deepest condolences to Ben’s family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
