Karen Sachs wrote on Facebook; Deeply sad over the loss of Atul Butte, one of the kindest, most outreach-focused professors I have encountered.

Atul knew me only in passing, as a postdoc of a colleague. I had a few small encounters with him that, to me, spoke volumes. One was when I ran into him after he had already left Stanford, and I was deciding what to do next. I was not his trainee, and we had never collaborated. But he enthusiastically offered to meet with me and give guidance. He was doing very well and must have been positively swamped, but he was happy to take time for a postdoc he barely knew.

Born in Philadelphia to Janardhan Butte and Mangela Butte, Atul Janardhan Butte was a pediatrician and Biotechnology entrepreneur who attended Brown University, where he studied computer science as an undergraduate.

He was the Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg professor at the University of California, San Francisco.

He lived with his wife, Gini Deshpande, a cancer biology and biotechnology entrepreneur, and his daughter in Menlo Park.
